Vessel Push Notifications

When we first launched Vessel, we weren't able to add push notifications due to time constraints. But once the app was released, we knew that we had to add this feature so users would know about new videos from their favorite creators. I worked closely with a PM on how we would design the logic and experience.

Creating a way for users to know when their favorite creators post new videos

Being a platform for fans to get early access to videos from their favorite creators, we knew that push notifications were necessary to let users know when they should open the app. We debated a few user flows to make sure users would trust us to enable notifications.

Prompting users to enable push notifications is always a slippery slope.

We know that once a user disables push notifications, it's extremely difficult to get them to turn them back on. So in the sign up flow, we prompted our own dialogue message to educate new users about the system dialogue that was going to pop up next.

We wanted to make sure users could have total control their notifications.

We all know that push notifications can get overwhelming, so we wanted to be mindful of how frequently users would get notified. Some channels post more than ten videos a day and others post one per week. Not only could you customize individual channel notifications, but if you had them enabled, you could customize the frequency of either every new video or one per every "x" number of videos.

Users could customize notifications right after following a channel.

We introduced a bell icon to toggle notifications on and off once a user follows a channel. The default setting is "sometimes" so users won't ever get bombarded with notifications if that channel posts multiple videos per day.
